Foreign friend Craig explores the Rice sculpture - Bing Dwen Dwen

Do you know how to say "incredible" in Wenzhou dialect? Craig, an American friend who lives in Wenzhou, has learned it. In this episode of the video series "Cracking the Nuts of Wenzhou Dialects", Craig and 2 students from Wenzhou university explore Wenzhou Rice sculpture. Craig gives his thumbs up and praises it in Wenzhou dialect.

Craig said that he has contacted with many incredible intangible cultural heritages in Wenzhou, such as hair embroidery, wooden arch bridges and so on. However, this is the first time to experience rice sculpture at such a close distance. According to the introduction of Dong Xizao, the inheritor of the provincial intangible cultural heritage - Rice sculpture, the craftsmanship of Rice sculpture is fully reflected in multiple aspects from simple patterns as flowers, birds, fish and bugs, to complicated figure statues, from the facial expressions of the various figures to the wrinkles of their clothes. And it takes a long time for the artists to cultivate such sophisticated skills. In Dong Xizao's studio, a row of rice-sculpted Bing Dwen Dwen truly surprised Craig. "Even if I’m trained for 1,000 years, I wouldn't be able to make such a work!" Said Craig.

For the video series "Cracking the Nuts of Wenzhou Dialects", we will continue to launch more videos in future. Please stay tuned.
