A Portuguese-Chinese girl enjoys gorgeous Ou embroidery

Wenzhou Ou embroidery, which has a distinctive regional characteristics of Dong’Ou, is famous for its concise picture composition, gorgeous colors, maneuverable needle-wielding, and bright embroidery surface. In this episode, let’s follow Chen Mengyao, the Portuguese anchor of the Wenzhou Overseas Media Center, to enjoy the gorgeous Wenzhou Ou embroidery.

As a national intangible cultural heritage, Ou embroidery has a long history. It originated in the Tang Dynasty and prevailed in the Ming and Qing dynasties. There was an old saying in Wenzhou: “Girls in 11 or 12 are taught to comb hairs, in 13 or 14 are taught to embroider by their mothers.” It implies that Ou embroidery was well-accepted among the girls in ancient times. In the video, Shi Chengquan, the inheritor of national intangible cultural heritage - Ou embroidery, displayed her exquisite Ou embroidery works, including the vivid lion embroidery with heterochromous colors and different patterns, and the flexible and elegant Chinese style “Lotus & Ink”embroidery. The colors used in Ou embroidery are rich, charming but not vulgar. The choice of color can bring a balance in color, and offer a sense of visual satisfaction for us. Ms.Shi said there were few subjects adopted in Ou embroidery works in the past, so she decided to make innovations. She combined Ou embroidery with oil painting, traditional Chinese painting, photography, and sketching to enrich Ou embroidery subjects and meet the market demand. I hope people from all countries can enjoy the charm of Ou Embroidery.
