About Kun Opera
Kun Opera is an ancient Chinese opera tune and drama. It combines singing, playing, dancing and martial arts etc,. It is famous for its literary lyrics, beautiful melody and exquisite performance. It is known as the "ancestor of the hundreds kinds of dramas." Kun Opera controls the rhythm with drums and plates, and uses the flutes and three-strings as the main accompaniments of musical instruments. Its singing tune is called “Zhongzhou intonations”. Kun Opera was listed as a “Representative Masterpiece of Human Oral and Intangible Heritage” by UNESCO in 2001.

About "The Rain on the Phoenix Tree"

The Kun Opera "The Rain on the Phoenix Tree" was adapted from Yuan opera "Emperor Ming of Tang: The Rain on the Phoenix Tree at Autumn Night", a representative masterpiece written by Bai Pu, one of the four masters of Yuan opera. It illustrates the love between Emperor Ming of Tang and his favorite concubine Yang Yuhuan and gives a touching sigh with deep feeling. With the creative concept of "Activating Yuan Opera with Kun Opera", the artists dig deep into the traditional cultural connotations and reproduce the classics of Yuan opera which had been quiescent for 700 years with the style of Kun opera.

Plot of Drama
The Emperor Ming of Tang is very fond of his favorite concubine Yang Yuhuan. They pledge their love with a golden hairpin and promise to be together forever in the Changsheng Temple at the night of Chinese valentine's day. Under the Phoenix Tree, beside the Chenxiang Pavillion, the song "Ningshang Yuyi" which shows the extreme prosperity of Tang country is performed at its climax, then get broken down suddenly by the war drums from Yuyang Province. The An-shi Rebellion makes the Emperor Ming of Tang rush to the west in a panic. In front of Ma Geipo, the once-sturdy vows of love are finally turned out to be flowing fluid. What’ left to the Emperor Ming of Tang at last just are the night rains on the phoenix tree, bit by bit...
