US photographer Roman shows you the marvelous Huangyang Boxwood Carving

"Every piece of wood has its own life. They are eager to have soul communications with us." Said Gao Gongbo, the inheritor of Yueqing Huangyang Boxwood Carving, a national-level intangible. With Mr. Gao’s elaborate creation, these boxwood carvings works are so lifelike with different expressions in different poses. In this video, Roman, the US anchor of the Wenzhou Overseas Media Center, shows you the marvelous Huangyang Boxwood Carving.

Huangyang Boxwood Carving is one of the first batch of intangible cultural heritages in China. It is a folk art in Yueqing with a history of more than 300 years. Huangyang Boxwood Carving has been deeply taken root into the life of Yueqing people, and it has become an important part of Yueqing’s history and culture. Characterized by tough texture and fine grain, boxwood is particularly suitable for sculpting figures. In addition to fine carving, it also has other means "root-carving" and "cleaving-carving". The former one preserves the external beauty of boxwood, while the latter two seek the beauty of inner texture.

In the video, Mr. Gao showed the production process of the boxwood carving works in details. Roman said: “It's truly fascinating to watch Gao working with wood. His hands work effortlessly as if he’s carving butter.” Furthermore, Roman appreciated Mr. Gao's wood carving art exhibition at Wenzhou Museum. These vivid and tempting wood carving works narrated the unique national stories and displayed the distinctive folk cultures from hundreds of countries. Mr. Gao said that the craftsmanship of Huangyang Boxwood Carving should be passed down from generation to generation. Our successors must carry forward the past achievements, forge ahead into the new, and create new glory.
